COVID-19 Relief: Form 990 Series Extension

Published on

Last month the IRS extended the traditional tax filing deadline for certain taxpayers from April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020. On April 9, 2020, the IRS issued Notice 2020-23 which extends this relief to generally all taxpayers (individuals and businesses) that have a filing or payment deadline falling on or after April 1, 2020, and before July 15, 2020. More detail on Notice 2020-23 can be found on our tax blog.

For nonprofit organizations, this means that the due date for the Form 990 (and any related tax payments, if applicable) is automatically postponed to July 15, 2020, if the original filing deadline was on or after April 1, 2020. Nonprofit organizations do not need to file an extension form or seek approval in order to take advantage of this relief.
