Maria T. Hurd, CPA

DIRECTOR – Accounting & Auditing

Retirement Plan Audit Services

Meet Maria
Diligent | Problem-Solver | Focused | Teacher

In the past five years, Maria and her team have more than doubled a practice exclusively dedicated to
auditing benefit plans. What a great opportunity for us and for our clients. She’s a diligent and focused
leader for our employee benefit plan audit section.

You know your team is doing something right when a Department of Labor (DOL) agent commends you
on your work product, including thorough audit documentation, accurate checklists, and audit work sufficient
to support the audit opinion on the plan’s financial statements. The DOL agent mentioned that Maria and her
team provided a quality of work that was just as good as the larger national firms in our industry.

Whether benefit plans have a few hundred participants or tens of thousands, Maria’s employee benefit plan
audit team performs the highest quality audit while causing the least amount of interruption to the client.

Perspectives from Maria

“Selecting a qualified auditor is an important fiduciary responsibility. To help clients choose BLS confidently,
I continue to build my knowledge base, staying on top of legislative changes through my ASPPA membership
and developing close working relationships with ERISA attorneys in the region.”

“The best part of being a retirement plan auditor is the opportunity to help clients with their operational
questions throughout the year. A big reason for our employee benefit blog is to provide a resource for clients
to get answers for common questions, so that they can prevent errors before they happen. Our goal is to tip
the scale to prevention and away from detection.”

    • Back to School with Charity Navigator

School has officially started across the country, and it looks like students won’t be the only ones who will be graded out of 100 points this year. Charity Navigator, a nonprofit organization that evaluates charities in the United States and compares them to charities with similar causes, recently changed their rating system from a 70-point scale to a 100-point scale.

The Delaware Division of Revenue (DOR) is reminding businesses that Delaware business licenses expire at the end of December and must be renewed by December 31, 2014 .The DOR notes that it is easiest to renew licenses online at www.delaware.gov, as it allows taxpayers to print a temporary license directly from their computer which substitutes as a valid license until a permanent license is received in the mail.
