Jeffrey A. Elwell, CPA

DIRECTOR/CHAIR – Accounting & Auditing

Meet Jeff
Attentive | Meticulous | Motivator | Diverse

Jeff is a man of many responsibilities, both for clients and BLS. He cultivates a strong client
service philosophy, helping address day-to-day issues. Jeff’s experience and background allows
him to work with a diverse group of for-profit and nonprofit clients.

He lives and breathes the “small is the new big” philosophy with a keen eye for building consultative
relationships. Jeff’s expertise is the same that you’d find at a much larger firm, yet it’s personalized
to each client and their industry. His work within audit and assurance, tax and consulting services,
financial reporting and tax planning gives his clients a big knowledge base with individual attention.

In addition to his client responsibilities, Jeff acts as the Quality Control Director for BLS, providing the
technical expertise on financial statement reporting issues, evaluating newly enacted accounting
principles and auditing standards and monitoring the firm’s compliance with professional standards.
He is also qualified to assist other accounting firms with their peer review as a peer review team
captain or team member.

Perspectives from Jeff

“I’m not a formal bean counter, the tie is a formality, but it’s not me. I provide value for my clients by
knowing their industry, knowing their goals, and providing the service necessary to make it happen.”

“Audit is such a negative word, but we can show you how painless it can be. It’s our job to create a
comfortable and meaningful relationship with clients that not only sets the groundwork for compliance,
but allows for timely service as well as constructive and valuable advisory feedback.”

In April 2013, the FASB issued Accounting Standards Update (ASU) 2013-06, Not-for-Profit Entities: (Topic 958): Services Received from Personnel of an Affiliate. ASU 2013-06, effective for fiscal years beginning after June 15, 2014, clarifies how nonprofit entities recognize and measure services received from personnel of an affiliate to ensure consistency amongst financial statement presentations.

    • Does your ERISA 403(b) Plan need a financial statement audit?

Many nonprofits who sponsor ERISA 403(b) plans are not aware that they need an audit, because counting participants involves much more than knowing how many full-time employees the organization has or how many account balances are in the plan.
